Tips & Tricks for choosing the right contractor

Willemstad, June 2026 - Building your dream home starts with choosing the right contractor. But an important part of building is not only who your contractor is, it’s also about how the entire process is organised and controlled.

Do you choose a contractor with a professional structure, clear contracts and extensive guidance? In most cases, this means higher costs, but it also provides more certainty, comfort and control throughout the construction process.

There are also homeowners who prefer a more hands-on approach by supervising the project themselves and working with a smaller contractor without a large back office. In many cases, the owner is personally involved on-site as a working foreman.

While this can significantly reduce costs, it also requires more personal involvement and usually comes with a higher risk of mistakes or complications during construction.

The right choice therefore mainly depends on your budget, expectations and how much control you would like to keep during the building process.

Clear and open communication remains essential throughout the project, especially for foreign buyers building abroad. Language barriers can easily lead to misunderstandings or costly mistakes during construction, so it’s important to work with a contractor who communicates clearly and understands your expectations.

It’s also wise to keep agreements and contracts practical and transparent. Clearly defining what is and isn’t included helps avoid unnecessary complications during the build.

Another helpful tip is to consider purchasing certain finishing materials yourself, such as kitchens, lighting or bathroom fixtures. Personal preferences often vary, and selecting these elements personally gives you more control over the final look and feel of your home.

Finally, don’t look at pricing alone. Ask for references, visit previous projects and choose a contractor you feel comfortable working with. Recommendations from friends or other homeowners are often the most valuable when choosing the right construction partner.
